Flowers in the Attic–the Cover

27940102389

So there they are. The Dresden Dolls. (No, not those) The Dollanganger/Foxworth tribe, the Fearsome Foursome. This stepback is amazingly simple: The four children (from the left: Christopher, Cathy, Carrie, and Cory), looking haunted and pale and being tormented by the looming specter of Christopher Walken. I’ve always found it interesting that it’s not Olivia or Corrine, but their grandfather in this image, but I suppose it makes sense since it’s for his benefit that the kids are locked away, at least initially. Grampa needs to cool it on the blush.

I haven’t done this in a while, but I wanted to point out some other covers that this masterpiece has had over the years, just for funsies. So, this is the copy I have:

Flowers-in-the-Attic-movie-tie-in-cover-vc-andrews-20778776-202-330

It’s the movie tie-in cover, so it’s fairly basic.

I guess this is the one that’s out now, with the first two books in one, with that “Black background, flower” cover thing that Twilight gifted to the world. Hey, at least it’s not a 50 Shades knock-off. Yet.

Ooooookay

Ooooookay

And this was an earlier repri–

GAH!

GAH!

YEAH NEVER MIND.

Let’s just get into this shall we.

Oh my god that last one.

Thanks to http://fuckyeahvcandrews.tumblr.com/ and Amazon, from whence I snitched these images.

  1. LENS FLARE

    • FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC INTO DARKNESS

      • WRATH OF MALCOLM?

  2. The last one will haunt you forever and ever amen. LOOK YOUNG TEEN. READ THIS BOOK. READ THIS LOVE STORY ABOUT THIS TWO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE. DON’T QUESTION THE FACT THEY LOOK JUST ALIKE!

    • IT’S SO ALARMING

  3. That last one is almost insulting. THIS IS NOT A ROMANCE BOOK. The incest is played for tragedy, not romance. WTF were the publishers /thinking/? 0_o

The flower one is better though. Like… the withering flowers could represent worsening health and faith in people. /end theories

  4. …The more I think about it, the more I believe that Christopher Walken would actually make a kickass Malcolm Foxworth, if the movie was ever remade.

And also, that last cover is what nightmares are made of.

  5. Woah! That is sooo creepy.
My cover is maroon with the house on the front.

  6. I had 2 copies of this book the first being the blue one with the house and the Dollanganger’s being scared of the doorknob, the second was…at least in my opinion meant to be the original, it was black, had the key hole cover of Cathy.

I honestly can’t believe that last one, Freaking horrifying, it is almost awful/awesome.

  7. i have collected copies of FITA from different places in the world. the thing i love about other crountries, is that they were not afraid to use her name, virginia and let the people know a woman wrote these books. the first time i saw it though i was a little shocked lol. of these covers. i kind of like the one with the withered roses. but when i was i a young teen getting my vc andrew fix the part of opening to the second cover to see what was behind the windows was one of the fun parts of the books.

  8. oh and the cover reminds me of a book i just read, and it looks almost the same

  9. I collect HEAVEN copies and particularly love the ones from England. I have one copy and the house on the front looks like your typical white farmhouse house. It’s way too large to be the cabin but way too small to be Farthy. I imagine it’s supposed to be the poor old cabin in West Virginia. I guess they figured that, it being printed in the UK, nobody there would know the difference.

  10. If you look at that old stepback, though, it IS their grandmother. See how she has the bun hairdo? The artist just drew her as a withered crone. She’s wearing the high-necked black dress, too.

    • Hmmmmm you may be onto something there! I’ve just automatically always seen that figure as Malcolm (it’s probably the Christopher Walken thing). Oh stepbacks. Endlessly entertaining.

    • OMG, IT IS??? IT IS!!!

  11. I just assumed they were playing to the incest market at the time–Wincest, twincest, etc.

  12. Last cover… *shiver* I would love to see the reaction of some unsuspecting tween/teen reader who hasn’t heard or read this book. Not at ALL what they would be expecting! I agree that the cover is insulting, who- why- what?? Idiot person who pitched this cover!

  13. Anyone else notice that the house in the background of the last cover looks like the house from from the movie Psycho?
